TEST, TEST, AND TEST AGAIN

Rubber offers endless possibilities, making it an exciting challenge to meet customer needs and requirements when developing a product. Testing is essential, covering aspects such as elasticity, strength, wear resistance and chemical resistance. Rubber products can be tested in four ways: in the lab, dynamically, statically or for shear resistance. But what does this look like in practice?

RIS Rubber is equipped with state-of-the-art testing facilities, including four specialised test benches. We invest heavily in testing technology because it contributes to a fast and cost-efficient development process. This ensures that customers benefit not only from better rubber products but also from reduced costs. Additionally, our test benches are calibrated by an external agency, enabling us to perform testing for third parties as well.

TESTING RUBBER

In our tests, we simulate real-world conditions using factors such as force, displacement, temperature and frequency. These testing methods allow us to confidently ensure that products meet the established requirements and can be deployed safely. Each test results in a detailed report.

FROM PROTOTYPE TO TESTING

A considerable number of steps are taken before a rubber product even reaches the testing phase. Based on the desired properties, a rubber compound is first created. This leads to a prototype, which can be tested in four different ways: in the lab, dynamically, statically or for shear resistance. In the lab, we test the rubber for hardness, tensile strength, tear resistance, elasticity, wear resistance and its resistance to chemical agents.

STATICALLY TESTING A RUBBER PRODUCT

Static tests are designed for moulded rubber products that do not move themselves but must withstand pressure. A simple example is a doorstop. For such products, spring stiffness – also referred to as elastic stiffness or deflection stiffness – and dimensional stability are crucial. For instance, a rubber buffer must not deform or lose its resilience when subjected to frequent heavy loads. We measure the impact when something heavy, light, hard or soft collides with the product. Using a test bench, we can evaluate the static properties of a product, such as axial, radial, torsional and cardanic stiffness. Additionally, we can apply loads at any desired speed. Our testing equipment is capable of handling loads of up to 2,300 tonnes and can accommodate dimensions up to 1,700 x 1,700 mm.

DYNAMICALLY TESTING RUBBER

Dynamic tests are obviously intended for moulded rubber products that are in motion. These tests determine whether the product can withstand vibrations and shocks. Does the product sufficiently dampen vibrations? What about heat buildup? When a product is required to absorb significant vibrations, friction can cause it to heat up. The compound’s ingredients are carefully formulated to minimise energy absorption and prevent overheating. On our dynamic test bench, we subject products to compressive and tensile forces to measure the maximum loads the moulded rubber component can endure.

SHEAR TESTING

Alongside static and dynamic testing, we also perform shear testing in our advanced lab. This state-of-the-art facility allows us to subject rubber products to compressive and shear forces simultaneously. For example, with a rubber fender, the impact of lateral forces and deformations must be tested together to ensure optimal performance.
