What is EPDM? EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, and the name EPDM rubber is used for a group of synthetic rubber types emanating from the polymerisation of propene, ethene and a diene, making them terpolymers. EPDM is a quality of synthetic rubber with excellent resilience when exposed to sunlight and weather conditions, making it ideal for outdoor applications.

What is EPDM? 

EPDM withstands ozone, UV radiation and ageing well, and is also resistant to acids and bases. It is particularly suitable for applications in sea water or warm water. In itself, this grade is already suited to meeting the highest demands of the water and food industries. EPDM rubber can withstand temperatures ranging from -30 to +130°C. Material hardness varies between a 30 and 90° Shore A rating.

A major benefit of EPDM rubber is its colour fastness. Since this grade is ozone-resistant, the rubber retains its original colour for a very long time.

EPDM rubber does not withstand crude oil, diesel, petrol, propane (gas) or kerosene. NBR rubber, however, can withstand oil, grease and lubricants.

What is the application of EPDM rubber? 

This grade of rubber is often used in the automotive industry for sealing profiles and hoses, as well as rubber joints for aluminium and synthetic window frames, among other things. Due to its temperature-resistant properties, EPDM rubber is also used for joints or hoses in dishwashers and washing machines, as well as water pipelines.

EPDM rubber is suitable for many outdoor applications and so it is often found in the shipping and construction industries. EPDM roof cladding is one well-known example of such applications.

RIS Rubber mostly uses EPDM rubber for gaskets of butterfly valves in the onshore and offshore industries, as well as for the production of expansion profiles.
